1. Install the Salesforce1 app on all smartphones
If you haven’t done it yet, install the Salesforce1 app on all your users’ smartphones. It will give the users instant access to Chatter and all other records in Salesforce in the same app.
2. Take and post photos
Nothing can draw attention to something as well as photos and images. Post photos on anything happening in the company as this always creates likes and also contributes to a better adoption of Chatter. With the Salesforce1 app it is really easy to post photos straight from your mobile phone.
4. Teach Executives how to use the Salesforce 1 app
Once I installed the Salesforce1 app on the mobile phone of a CEO and told him that he could easily send messages and photos to all employees with only few clicks on his mobile phone. This was a success as normally everybody follows what the CEO does in a company, and once people noticed that the CEO is using Chatter this way they started using it too. In this case the posts (with photos) also created a lot of valuable discussions around the customers and other company information.
5. Fine tune Chatter settings and update which fields can automatically make Chatter posts
In Chatter setup go through the feed tracking to see which fields can create feed updates in Chatter because it must be relevant data that shows up in people's feeds. Remove field updates for fields that are not that important for your business. Also take some time to go through the rest of the Chatter settings so that they comply with your company’s needs.
6. Use the @-mentions when you discuss in Salesforce
I think this is the best function in Chatter. If you want to notify a user about a record in Salesforce or a post in Chatter, just write ‘@’ followed by the users name in your message and click ”Share”. If the user has the Salesforce1 app in his or her mobile phone, he or she is then notified immediately. An email message is also sent to the user if the standard email settings have not been changed .
7. Install Chatter desktop
There is a stand-alone desktop application for Mac and PC’s to be used for Chatter. If someone mentions you, you will be notified immediately and you can also reply instantly to that message.
8. Do more in Chatter with apps on AppExchange
There is multiple apps in AppExchange that can do a lot of things with Chatter. You can for example auto-follow and unfollow records in Salesforce. Click here to see all Chatter Appexhange apps.
9. Extend Chatter usage with API
With API functionality you can extend the use of Chatter. For example, with this functionality other systems can integrate with your Chatter and automatically create posts in your chatter feed.
