Training as a strategic advantage in times of change – why training is more than knowledge transfer

Training in the workplace is often seen as a functional necessity: teaching employees how to use a tool or process. But in reality, training is far more strategic. It shapes how people adapt to change, how confident they feel in their roles, and ultimately how well organisations can execute their vision.

As Fluido’s Lead Instructor, Jouni Hult, puts it, “Training is a key part of change management, and it should be a key part of your strategy planning as well. It should never be left as a side thought.”

Building capability, not just skills

Effective training goes beyond providing information. It creates space for interaction, problem-solving, and the “Aha” moments that turn abstract concepts into practical capability. Trainers and participants highlight the value of tailoring training to individual needs, whether through Salesforce courses on Trailhead, Fluido-designed trainings, or custom programmes aligned with customer goals.

The best training moments often happen when trainers respond to unexpected challenges in the room– different roles, backgrounds, and levels of expertise. This adaptability ensures that every participant leaves with insights they can apply in their specific context.

Measuring impact

Measuring training effectiveness can’t stop at a feedback survey. Pre-assessments and post-training evaluations help organisations see whether participants enjoyed the training and whether knowledge has been retained and applied. Follow-ups weeks or months later are just as important, ensuring the investment translates into lasting value.

As Jouni highlights, “Training is just giving the tools, but the actual learning happens once the training has been delivered.” This perspective reinforces the need for organisations to plan for their training initiatives’ immediate and long-term outcomes.

The future of training: AI-driven customisation

Artificial intelligence is already reshaping the way training can be designed and delivered. Generative AI tools allow training content to be rapidly adapted to different audiences, making it easier to provide tailored learning experiences at scale. What previously took significant time and effort– building custom materials for diverse groups– can now be accelerated, freeing trainers to focus on interaction and impact.

This doesn’t diminish the role of human trainers. On the contrary, it elevates their ability to engage learners directly while ensuring content speaks to each participant’s unique context.

Training as a tool for retention and resilience

Organisations today face shrinking workforces and intensifying talent competition. Training is one of the most effective levers for both retention and performance. Employees who see their organisation investing in their development are more capable, engaged, and loyal.

Embedding training into strategy isn’t optional, it’s the foundation for building resilience and agility in a rapidly changing world.
